Are there any exceptions to breaking continuous service through terminal illsness of spouse when changing jobs?

The person worked in a probation office in the midlands moved to the south west to take up the same position but his wife became terminally ill immediately and only had six weeks left to live so took the time to be with her and then obviously to grieve. How does the law look at this pleaseAre there any exceptions to breaking continuous service through terminal illsness of spouse when changing jobs?
Here is a link to ACAS, who will be able to tell you exactly where you stand. http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Dl1/Director
