Ok, I work for a hospital in a town with a population of about 50,000 or so. I actually work in one of the clinics owned by the hospital. Another clinic that has just opened up in the past 2 years wants me to come to work for them but if I were to change jobs I would lose my retirement I have with the hospital. I know in this job I would make more money, just not sure how much more. What should I do? What could I do with my retirement like in transfering it.Should I change jobs? I will loose retirement and Im not sure what to do to compensate that?

Rolling over a 401K, the normal investment readily available to most employees, is a fairly simple and easy thing to do.



Moving your current retirement account to an IRA is what most people do, so see your bank or investment specialist and ask them to help you.



The only thing you can lose there is the matching money put in by the hospital, the amount that is not yet vested when you leave.



Since vesting is a matter of the amount of time you have been an employee, the number of years you've been there will determine what % of matching money you will be able to keep.



Any other retirement accounts you will have will already be owned by you or the federal government, like Social Security.

Your employer can help you cash out, but you'll need to find it a home to keep from having to pay taxes and penalties.

Depends on the retirement plan. Most are not transferable.. Stay with the pension. Social Security is not enough to live on.
