How long does it take to change jobs?

Okay, here's my situation.

I am interested in joining the Air-Force. However, I am not a citizen, only a resident.

All the jobs that I like require you to be a citizen, such Security Forces, Pararescue and pilot.

So coming to my question. Can I join and do a temporary job than switch to one of these later on.

How long will it take?

is there anything that I should know about like difficulties that might come in the way.

My recruiter that I am talking to told me that I can tranfer from one job to another once I get my citizenship.

but, him being a recruiter, he's not telling me the whole story.

Any good info would be good. How long does it take to change jobs?
Unless your AFSC is way over manned.

You will not be allowed to retrain into another AFSC untill you reenlist.

You can reenlist before your current enlistment contract runs out.

Usually up to a year early, but sometimes up to two years early.

But, you will have to gain your citizenship before you are allowed to reenlist.

Also note, they will not allow you to retrain into a afsc that is over manned.

And right now, alot of Air Force afsc's are over manned.

So your looking at atleast 3 years in your first afsc, before you could reenlist and retrain.

And to the first poster, no they do not allow illegal aliens to enlist in the US military.

That's no acurate. I'm was only a resident and I joined the Army, then they helped me to gain citizienship. Hell, the offering it to illegals if they join.
The key is getting your U.S.citizenship and if the job that you want requires a High Security clearance, It might take some time because of background checks even going back to the Old Country to see if any of your relatives are the ';bad guys';!

Most likely, You can change jobs after you complete your initial term of service.
In the AF you have to stay in your job for 5 years before cross training out. If you cross train into say Security Forces you will be required to pass a very thorough Background check for a security clearance and there are also age restrictions on certain jobs. In order to be Pilot you have to be an Officer and that requires a four year degree first. You can work on your degree after you enlist and then apply for OTS but they take a very small percentage of enlisted people and there is an age limit.
After your initial enlistment is up you will have an opportunity to cross train into another career field. Enlistment terms are typically 4 to 6 years. However, while the opportunity to apply for this is guaranteed, there is a possibility that you won't be allowed for various reasons (manning and retainabilty are two that come to mind). I would suggest going to another recruiter (without telling him that you have all ready spoken to your current one) to get another view point. That way you can see how full of it, or honest, he has been with you thus far.

I'm assuming that you are considering becoming enlisted as opposed to commissioned. If that is the case then the pilot career field is out of the question as it requires a degree and some form of a commissioning program (ROTC, OTS, AFA).

The security clearance might be a bit of a problem for you also (as someone previously alluded too). But it shouldn't be an insurmountable one. Most jobs in the Air Force require a security clearance of some sort now anyway.

Whatever you decide to do, do not leave their office without a guaranteed job. No open contract of any sort. Don't let them sweet talk you by saying, ';Oh yeah, you'll be able to pick your job when you get to basic.';

Any any event, thank you for your desire to serve and best of luck to you.
