How do you stop a small dog with seperation anxiety from ripping up your carpet when you go out?

Our dog has been by my side all his life. Now I have changed jobs and have to leave him in sometimes on his own. He always tries to dig up the carpet to get out. How do I stop him without resorting to smacking him?How do you stop a small dog with seperation anxiety from ripping up your carpet when you go out?
You should never tell your dog 'no' unless you catch him in the act. He'll not know what your telling him. Remember, dogs are dogs, not people.

You should get a behavouirst in, they can advise you on the best way to help your dog cope with the loss of his 'alpha leader' during the day. Dogs are PACK animals, meaning they live in groups. you and him have been a pack, and learning to cope by himself is going to be hard. DAP diffuser from your vet can help him feel at ease. Consider Crate training, and get him some chew toys and a kong to keep him occupied while your out.

Maybe concider a doggy day care place or dog walker to allow him out during the day.How do you stop a small dog with seperation anxiety from ripping up your carpet when you go out?
get another dog.
He needs to know that when you leave your coming back, try small gaps of 5Min's, then return and praise him. Also leaving something of yours as a sort of comforter is also said to help. And old pair of slippers/shoes as they carry a lot of your sent.

And another thing to try is leaving a radio on, a lot of animals have problems dealing with silence.
leave him in the street
give him or her another friend
Get him a stuff toy to act as a buddy for starters. If there is something to keep him company that may help. Also, it may help if you handle the toy frequently so it has your scent so the dog can associate to toy with you.

Start my leaving the dog in one room and you leaving to another room for small intervals at a time. After the dog copes well with you being in another room for periods of time, try leaving the house all together repeating the process as when you simply left the room. Make sure the dog has steady access to the previously suggested toy.

Another thing you may want to look inot if the seperations don't work is kennel training your pooch. Kennel training isn't for everyone or all dogs. Speak with a pro to get ideas how to go about this. A lot of pet stores has pros on staff like Petsmart and Petco. You can even speak with your vet.

I suggest strongly against the smacking tho. Your dog is acting out due to the feeling of being abandoned, but smacking the dog as repremanding him upon returnng he may act out more after feeling dejected . Popping, should be a last resort.
crate him when you cant supervise him.
get VERY angry and ignore him 4 a short while if he keeps on doing it you'll have to resort to taping him on the nose
Buy a nice chewable toy or bone and get your dog really excited about this new toy! When you are leaving take it out from hiding a distract your dog with his favourite toy. Don't make a big deal of leaving, like: bye doggie! good boy! Just distract him from you leaving and don't make a big deal leaving but make sure he is distracted. Maybe even put some peanut butter in a toy with a hole in it... so it will take time for him to play with.
I once had a beagle that had that problem. I couldn't even go to the grocery store without him peeing. I took him in the car as often as I could, but when he had to be left, a crate was the only solution. Get something that is large enough to accommodate a pillow, a toy, and a water dish. Good luck
The best thing to do is get him a crate. I understand you may not like the idea of confining him, but a crate is a good alternative to unwanted behavior. Dogs are ';den'; animals anyway, and it will provide a safe place for him. If he has been with you most of his life that may be the issue anyway.... not feeling safe while you are gone. Try some fun and interesting toys ( hide-a-squirrel is great) and some super tasty treats (bully sticks) next time you have to leave and if they don't help distract him, think about the crate.
you put a plastic bag on his head.I'm sorry but your dog isn't more important than your sister
Give it a good run until he gets tired. Anxity comes from frustration which comes from lack of excercise.
get a kennel, it may be harsh but the dog might grow to love it and try to teach it how to stop doing that!
Get a kennel for the dog or crate him when you are gone.

I had a cocker that did that so I crated him. That solved the problem and he even started to like his crate after awhile.
Crate him.
get a kennal cage and when you go out put him in it, after you make sure he went to the bathroom outside. he may bark but that's better than replacing carpet all the time!
Get a dog crate. It may sound mean but it truely isn't. My dog goes into her crate when we are away from home and at night. We keep a small bowl with food in it and we give her a treat every time we put her in it. It also has a pillow and a small blanket which makes it quite cozy. Just don't use it as a punishment and your dog won't view it as a negative thing. The dog may whine at first but that is normal.
